Programmatic SEO for Startups: A 30-Day Playbook
How to ship 1,000 SEO pages in 30 days without wrecking your site. The exact stack, the pitfalls, and the expected results.
Programmatic SEO means generating large numbers of pages from a template and a dataset. Done right, it can take a startup from 0 to 10,000 monthly organic sessions in a quarter. Done wrong, it gets your entire site penalized. Here is the 30-day playbook for doing it right.
Week 1: Research the template
Find a high-intent query pattern that can be templated. Examples:
[city] [service][tool 1] vs [tool 2]how to [action] with [tool]
The template must serve a real user need, not just target keywords. Google's spam update from 2024 specifically targets low-value programmatic content.
Week 2: Build the dataset
Gather the data that makes each page unique. This is where most programmatic SEO fails — the dataset has to be substantial enough to create real value. If you are just swapping a city name, you will fail. If each page has unique statistics, comparison data, or first-party insights, you will succeed.
Week 3: Ship 100 pages and measure
Do not ship 1,000 pages on day one. Ship 100, let Google index them, and check Search Console for quality signals. If impressions grow, you are safe. If not, pause and investigate before shipping more.
Week 4: Scale to 1,000
If the first 100 pages gained traction, scale. Ship the remaining 900 across 5-7 days. Monitor closely. If impressions stall, stop and diagnose before continuing.
The stack
- Static site generator: Astro, Next.js, or Hugo
- Data source: CSV, database, or API
- Template engine: built into your SSG
- Indexing acceleration: IndexNow and sitemap submission
The expected results
A well-executed programmatic SEO sprint delivers 1,000-5,000 monthly organic sessions from 1,000 pages within 90 days. Some pages will explode, most will be quiet, a few will get deindexed. That is normal. Measure the aggregate, not individual pages.
The warning
Google can and will demote your entire site if the pages are thin. Quality at the page level is non-negotiable. Every generated page should be something a human would consider useful. If not, do not ship it.
